Iran urges Afghanistan to expedite repatriation of illegal immigrants

Tehran, IRNA – Tehran has urged Kabul to expedite the sustainable repatriation of illegal Afghan immigrants from Iran.

According to the website of Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the fourth meeting of the joint consular commission between the Islamic Republic of Iran and Afghanistan was held in Tehran after an eight-year hiatus, chaired by directors general of the consular affairs of the ministries of foreign affairs of the two countries.

During the meeting, a wide array of crucial consular issues were discussed, particularly focusing on matters concerning the nationals of both countries.

Accordingly, the emphasis was placed on the Afghan side to expedite the sustainable repatriation of illegal immigrants from Afghanistan. Furthermore, there was a call for serious cooperation and responsibility from Kabul to halt the influx of illegal Afghan nationals into Iran.

The meeting also touched upon the readiness for scientific and academic cooperation with top Afghan students, highlighting the importance of them continuing their studies.

Additionally, there was an emphasis on strengthening police and law enforcement cooperation to combat drug trafficking and resolving transit drivers' obstacles and issues between the two countries.

At the end of the meeting, it was decided to establish a consular committee with specialized sub-branches to follow up on the issues discussed.
